In the community: JLL Chicago gives back in 2016

Making a meaningful difference in our community is one of JLL Chicago’s top priorities. In 2016, we came together as a team and chose to focus our charitable engagement around three incredibly important organizations: American Heart Association, Leukemia & Lymphoma Society and Misericordia.

Let’s look back at some of this year’s efforts, which resulted in nearly $50,000 in contributions to these invaluable groups.

Through Managing Director Jesse Van Dyke, JLL Chicago has had a strong relationship with the American Heart Association for more than 15 years. In addition to representing the organization’s Midwest real estate needs, Jesse’s connection is extremely personal.

“In 2011, my father had a heart attack in the hospital while in recovery from bladder cancer surgery. Watching someone in your family go through open heart surgery will serve as a quick reminder of how impactful lifestyle choices are for your health,” Jesse said.

Since then, he increased his involvement on AHA’s Associate Board, volunteering, planning events and raising funds for AHA’s courageous fight against heart disease, the No. 1 cause of death in America.

This year, under Jesse’s leadership, our team participated in the September Heart Walk, AHA’s premiere fundraising event to build healthier lives free of cardiovascular disease and stroke. Just last week, JLL sponsored AHA’s groundbreaking Heart Innovation Forum, a healthcare industry gathering to discuss innovative ways to accelerate science and better understand heart disease and stroke treatment.

Leukemia & Lymphoma Society

JLL Managing Director Dan McCarthy has been an active fundraiser and eventual board member of the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society since the diagnosis of his young daughter Maddy—today a happy and healthy girl with a bright future ahead.

“I have tremendous personal gratitude for the mission and work of LLS,” said Dan. “We will continue fighting blood cancers and improving the lives of patients and their families. I’m also grateful for the support of JLL, which encourages its people to contribute to building healthier communities.”

In 2014, Dan was runner-up for the Man & Woman of the Year Campaign, a 10-week fundraising competition to benefit LLS. This year, he led Team JLL’s participation in Light The Night, LLS’s annual fundraising walk and the nation’s way to pay to tribute to those battling blood cancer.

In addition to walking, Team JLL hosted a booth including face painters and a magician, and we had a blast! Thousands of families, friends and colleagues came out to Soldier Field for an emotional evening of remembrance and celebration of life.

JLL community engagement - Misericordia's Family Fest

Misericordia has been helping those in need for almost 100 years. On its 31-acre Chicago campus, Misericordia supports more than 600 children and adults with developmental disabilities. Through resident programming, family outreach and volunteer engagement, the organization has fostered a community committed to maximizing the potential of its most vulnerable.

“Misericordia means so much to our JLL team,” said Regional Director Sean Reynolds, who spearheaded JLL’s involvement with the organization. “We all know families and loved ones who have benefited tremendously from Misericordia’s network of services.”

Earlier this year, Sean took a committee position organizing the 42nd annual Misericordia Bums Golf Outing, where more than 500 golfers hit the links at Olympia Fields and Flossmoor Country Clubs to support the Misericordia mission.

Not stopping there, JLL was proud to sponsor Family Fest, Misericordia’s largest fundraising event. More than 12,000 people attended the day of food, games and fun for the whole family, including many JLLers and their families. In total, the event raised nearly $1.5 million.

As we head into the holiday season, we’d like to give thanks to our employees for their values, generosity and commitment to community above all.
