According to a variety of published reports, two new data centers are now under development south of the Loop in downtown Chicago.
California-based Equinix Inc. is planning to invest roughly $350 million in a new data center at 111 E. Cermak Road while Chicago-based Sterling Bay Cos. is partnering with with St. Louis-based Ascent Corp. to build a $200 million facility at 717-727 S. Desplaines St.
Sean Reynolds, co-head of the JLL Chicago Data Centers Practice Group, says the two projects demonstrate Chicago’s emerge as a key data center player nationally:
“We feel that the recent weather issues on the east coast, the limited product in downtown Chicago and the 30 plus Fortune 500 companies in Illinois are driving this focus on data center investment in Chicago. As more large corporations and financial firms look to outsource their data centers we should see continued data center developers and end users investing in Chicago metro area.”
